About This Role

Veranex has an exciting opportunity to join our team as Veterinary Technician 1. You will be part of a team working to improve lives globally through medical technology innovation. The Veterinary Technician 1 supports the execution of preclinical research studies by monitoring health status surveillance for animals; serves as liaison to the Veterinarian in providing healthcare to the animals; administers daily treatments and medications for animals as instructed or required; assists in or provides routine and emergency medical treatment to animals.

What You Will Do

  • Administers routine and daily treatments and medications to animals as instructed, prescribed, and/or required
  • Manages the pre- and post-operative care of surgical models.
  • Utilizes monitoring equipment to closely monitor live animal models before, during, and after anesthesia administration. Ensures vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, ECG, and temperature are within set parameters
  • Maintains accurate and detailed anesthesia records, documenting medications administered, vital signs, observations, and any complications during anesthesia
  • Monitors animal recovery and administers post-procedure medications
  • Performs routine diagnostic laboratory procedures (i.e., bloodwork, fecal exams, urinalyses, etc.). Collects and submits biological specimens to laboratories for analysis
  • Assists with implementing activities to meet the behavioral and enrichment needs of animals including, but not limited to, behavioral assessments, socialization, operant training, and cage safety.
  • Provides support in daily animal care and participates in developing and maintaining appropriate and varied enrichment plans for animals.
  • Manages cleaning, stocking, and inventory schedule of veterinary areas.
  • Manages laboratory/veterinary equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Assists with and performs humane euthanasia as needed or directed, in accordance with organization’s procedures and veterinary professional regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists with and performs necropsies, tissue collection, trimming and processing
  • Audits records, reviews data, and assists with report writing
  • Prepares and executes cadaver model procedures

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certification and 1-3 years of relevant work experience.
  • Working knowledge of veterinary terminology and veterinary products and their uses
  • Good knowledge of medication calculations and common drips used for laboratory animals
  • Good understanding of safety protocols for clinical environment and animal care
  • Good understanding of Operating Room etiquette and aseptic techniques
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good attention to detail and strong observation skills
  • Ability to operate complex medical and research equipment, including gas anesthesia systems and ventilators
  • Ability to execute medical orders and research protocol instructions with no supervision
  • Ability to safely handle and properly restrain laboratory animals
  • Strong ability to communicate animal needs to staff effectively
  • Ability to administer routine and emergency treatments and medications
  • Ability to administer and maintain general anesthesia in an operating room environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • AALAS Certification at the LAT level or higher
