About Fundraise Up
We’re Fundraise Up - a global fundraising platform built to make donating to nonprofits fast, seamless, and accessible to all. Every month, our technology powers tens of millions of dollars in donations across the globe. We focus on innovation that directly impacts results: faster load times, higher conversion rates, global payment support, and accessibility-first design.
Our platform is trusted by many of the world’s leading nonprofits, including UNICEF, the Alzheimer’s Association, and a wide range of global NGOs. With a 4.9/5 rating across top software review platforms, we’re recognized not just for our impact - but for the quality of the product we deliver.
A Truly Global Product
We operate in the enterprise segment, serving nonprofit organizations across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Europe.
We’re building a large and complex product ecosystem that serves nonprofits, donors, and partners around the world. The platform includes a modern checkout experience and customizable widgets (each a standalone SPA), donor, organization, and partner portals, admin tools, and several internal apps.
Our backend is powered by Node.js (Koa, NestJS) and MongoDB. The frontend stack includes Webpack, Vue.js, and React, with nearly all code written in TypeScript. For high-throughput messaging and background processing, we use Kafka (for millions of events) and Bull (Redis). Analytics data is stored in ClickHouse, and we use Elasticsearch for search.
The Team
We are a distributed team of 160+ product professionals, including 80+ engineers. Our team members are mainly based across Spain, Poland, Portugal, Georgia, Armenia, Serbia, Turkey, and Cyprus. Many of our developers bring 5 - 10+ years of experience, and we foster a culture of deep technical curiosity and knowledge sharing.
Despite our scale, we operate like a focused team - where every task matters and every voice is heard. We value thoughtful collaboration, strong engineering practices, and a product mindset. You’ll be joining a team where quality, mentorship, and mutual respect come first.
About the Role
As a Staff Data Engineer, you will own the technical architecture and long-term direction of our Data domain. The data platform already powers analytics across the company — you'll take full ownership of it, set its multi-year direction, and be the person the whole engineering org trusts on data decisions.
This is a founding, senior individual-contributor role: your leverage comes from technical authority and cross-team influence, not from managing people. You'll partner closely with analytics, Data Science, and engineering teams, and as data needs grow you'll shape how the function expands.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and steward a 1–2 year technical roadmap for the Data Warehouse platform. Evaluate the efficiency of the current tech stack.
- Build reliable ETL/ELT processes and develop scalable data pipelines for delivering data into a centralized analytical warehouse.
- Own and document the key architectural decisions (ADRs) for data models, pipelines, and warehouse design; surface structural risks before they block delivery.
- Serve as the technical counterpart for product and analytics teams: establish data engineering standards and governance and drive their adoption across teams, with the authority to block decisions that threaten data integrity.
- Act as the senior technical escalation point for data-related incidents — drive resolution and implement systemic fixes that address root causes.
- Write and optimize queries for MongoDB and ClickHouse.
- Manage and maintain workflows in Airflow.
- Mentor analysts and product teams to model and use data well, making your expertise reusable through patterns and documentation.
- At Fundraise Up, AI is a default tool, not an experimental one. We expect you to actively use AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex) in your day-to-day work — for building pipelines, querying, debugging, and exploration — and to grow your fluency as the tools evolve.
Requirements
- Experience: 12+ years as a Data Engineer, with a track record of owning data architecture decisions that held up over time.
- Experience leading complex, cross-team technical changes — design, coordination, and driving to completion — across teams that don't report to you.
- Programming: 5+ years with Python; strong with Kafka. Node.js is a plus.
- Strong understanding of data processing algorithms and principles.
- Hands-on experience with ClickHouse, Airflow, Amazon S3, Git, Docker.
- Solid understanding of Data Lake and Data Warehouse architectures.
- Experience working with large-scale data and query optimization.
- Hands-on, daily use of AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex) as a core part of how you work — not occasional experimentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively toward shared goals.
- Strong sense of ownership, responsibility, and proactivity.
- English level: B2+.
Nice to Have
- Experience with Apache Parquet, MLflow, MongoDB.
- Public technical communication — RFCs, ADRs, tech talks.
- Experience in a distributed, remote-first engineering organization.
