Energy Aspects currently have an exciting opportunity available for a Data Analyst to join our Data Team based out of our Kolkata office. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced analyst or aspiring technical/data-focused specialist to work closely with our highly regarded natural gas, power and emissions teams, optimizing our data content and capabilities while modeling the future energy transition.

The successful candidate will contribute to the full cycle of our work, from data mining, building and maintaining data models and assisting with detailed analysis. You will spend much of your time working with data, putting your technical and analytical skills to good use.

Combined with your abilities in Python and SQL, you will have professional or academic experience in in statistics, modeling or data analysis and a desire to work in the energy industry, enabling you to quickly take on a range of responsibilities including modelling, data visualisation and the automation of our data collection services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Taking full ownership of projects, from data collection to modelling and deployment
  • Understanding analyst requirements and deliver solutions to answer market questions
  • Proposing and implementing market models. Managing the relationship with key users of these models.
  • Deliver market model and other data results to clients via our portal and API.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • 4+ years of experience in Data Analysis and related fields
  • Background in Engineering, Science, Statistics, Mathematics or related fields of studies.
  • Value driven and can-do attitude. We are a fast-growing company which creates a lot of opportunities for growth but also requires delivery on a wide range of tasks.
  • Ability to own and deliver projects involving stakeholders with a wide range of technical capabilities.
  • Ability to guide junior staff members to help them make a meaningful contribution towards projects.
  • Understanding of the importance of data governance and metadata.
  • Excellent statistical analysis skills.
  • Working knowledge of Excel.
  • Attention to detail in both handling data and written English.

Python :
  • Ability to write production level code with an excellent understanding of best practices, including multi-variate regressions and other forecast models.
  • Excellent understanding of code life cycle best practices (dependencies management, code reusability, version control, cloud deployment)
  • Working knowledge of data science and statistical modelling libraries (e.g. pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, statsmodels) for building and validating forecast and market models.
SQL:
  • Ability to build efficient queries across complex data models
  • Ability to understand and update existing data models
  • Ability to design new data models
Data Science and Modelling:
  • Solid grounding in statistical and machine learning techniques relevant to time-series and market forecasting (e.g. regression, classification, clustering, time-series analysis).
  • Ability to perform feature engineering, model selection, and validation (train/test splits, cross-validation, backtesting) to ensure robust and reproducible models.
  • Understanding of model evaluation metrics (e.g. RMSE, MAE, R², precision/recall as appropriate) and how to communicate model performance and limitations to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Awareness of common pitfalls in applied data science — overfitting, data leakage, look-ahead bias — particularly relevant when modelling energy market data.

Desirable skills
  • Use of cloud data platforms (Google Cloud, AWS).
  • Energy sector experience is not essential but would be advantageous.
  • An interest in commodities, energy or financial markets would be beneficial.
